Here I was testing on Win2K SP2, Firebird 1.5 release. fbclient.dll is on
the same machine, built into c:\winnt\system32 as gds32.dll, using the
instclient utility. IBO 4.3Ab.

I just looked back at what you have:
Win2k,
FireBird 1.5 (.0.3815) - that is a very old release candidate (RC6) from
last September.
delphi 5,
IB_Objects 3.6 - date sometime in 2001. Predates Firebird by about two years.

As they say in the movies, "go figure".
