I don't think Fb/1.5 completely solves your problem, but the situation may
improve somewhat.
Maybe changes in Fb/1.5.2, Fb/1.6 or Fb/2.0 will ...

Can you schedule sweeps to be run in low-activity periods (e.g. at night)?
Maybe you really have a _lot_ of garbage in the db - can this be
(drastically) reduced?
