The server is an active directory domain controller and I am also
running MSSQL, Firebird 1.5 and Exchange on it. This is not to imply
that it is heavily loaded, the databases are used mostly for software
development and the exchange server services very few mail accounts, but
it might be a data point for your problem.

Out of curiosity, what is the server's hardware configuration? And,
did you do any special configuration in MSSQL to try to limit the
memory consumption?
