The best distro is the one you're most familiar with. :)

I have Firebird installed on Mandrake 9.0 (both SS and CS) and on
Slackware 9.1. They work great everywhere. Prehaps even better on Slack
since it requires less resources for OS, so more is left to the
Firebird. OTOH, Mandrake is easier to configure and maintain.

If you have to choose between RH and SuSE, I can't help you much.

SS or CS depends on what you want db to use for. Read here and choose
