I'm using RC 9 CS on Slack 9.1 without any problems. I'm not familiar
with SS on Unices, i used it only in windows. If SS doesn't work, you
can always use CS, it may be even faster on local connection. Is there
any special reason for SS in your case?

Just a quick shot: is the port 3050 free on your machine?
