I wouldn't think the end result will be much different in terms of speed -
some else might have more knowledge of this.
It will take you longer to write a UDF lib from scratch if you have no
experience with them than to write a Store Proc which will still use F_MID
etc UDFs anyway.

I would do it the SP way first even before I opened my source again for UDFs
I have written.
