I wouldn't suspect IBE as the first line. I can do remote backups of my
databases on Linux from Windows using L. Mengoni's IBOAdmin components, a
"Borland-free" conversion of the Service components. I can restore the
backups without crashing the server. I don't have IBE.

It might in some way have to do with the filesystem permissions on the
Linux server. You might save yourself some grief by raising this
possibility with the people who installed Firebird on the server - find out
whether they took on board the tips about permissions in the installation
notes in the 1.5 release notes.
