Dialup is OK but it *is* necessary for them not to have conflicts between
their NIC's TCP/IP setup and their Internet TCP/IP setup. Assuming Windows
here...the actual HowTo at applet level depends on Windows version.

On Win2K I can inspect the properties of the both the NIC and the Internet
WAN from their respective applets.

-- the properties for "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" for the "Local Area
Connection" item are as follows:
At the top, "Connect using" shows the identifier for my NIC.
Beneath, the radiobutton for "Use the following IP address" is selected and
in there, I have the LAN address of my card (10.12.13.1). The subnet mask
is 255.255.255.0, as it should be for all nodes on the LAN. The gateway
address is 10.12.13.0, although it's not really needed for network, as I'm
only using a hardware switch for the LAN.

My Dialup applets show the following properties:
On the "General" tab, "Connect using" shows the identifier for my dialup modem.
On the "Networking" tab only "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" is checked and,
in its properties, the radiobuttons for "Obtain an IP address
automatically" and "Obtains DNS server address automatically" are
checked. (If the ISP doesn't provide that service, they should have select
"Use the following IP addresses" and enter the two DNS addresses in there).

I mention this level of detail because I've encountered setups where the
TCP/IP settings for the NIC, at either client or host or both, haven't been
set up properly. Chaos takes over when both try to access the one TCP/IP
configuration in the stack or, in the case of Win98 clients, the one at the
top of the stack. On Win98, you can push the LAN configuration up to the
top of the protocol list to make it the default, and disable "Always dial.."

On a misconfigured network there's usually more to it than I've mentioned
here, but it's up to their network people to set things up so that there's
no overlap between the LAN and the WAN.

All this is *assuming* that a TCP/IP misconfiguration is causing the
network fault. The TCP/IP vs Broadband thing might be coincidence. There
are plenty of other reasons a client might lose the server...the server log
(interbase.log or firebird.log) is the place to seek the clues.
