Even on Windows one can/could do this.

BUT the nice thing about embedded is that I don't have to worry if some
other application already has installed Firebird, in which case I would
have figure out how to add my stuff without causing havoc on the other app.

And if that is a problem to the user and he/she knows enough they can
change things and my app will then use the existing server.
