I had a colleague who encountered the same problem you mentioned and
that was eventually how he fixed it. I believe it is a problem with
IB6, and both IB 7 and FB1.5 run well with hyperthreading on.
Basically, hyperthreading allows more than one operation to access
different parts of the CPU simultaneously. Generally, it makes things
faster, although my guess is that IB6 causes some sort of deadlock
which has to timeout.

Implications, I am only guessing at, but other applications on the
server may run slower. If it is mainly a file server though,
processing power will not be a bottleneck even with hyperthreading
off. You might lose 15% speed at worst.
