There are outstanding bugs in RC8. Check the task list at sourceforge.
I am also new to using firebird, and I also started with 1.5 RC8. After running into a dead end and blaming my connectivity component set, I checked the task list and discovered that most of my questions/concerns/problems were on that list.
While I had fun and learned a lot about the product internals by observing its problems, I personally would suggest dropping back to 1.0.3 for a production system.
