Í tryed the connection character set but still no succes....

So I have @ the connection iso8859_1 and at the field I have also VARCHAR
with iso8859_1 and collate iso8859_1

Other suggestions??

Are you specifying ISO8859_1 for the "connection" character set? By
default it is NONE, and you need to at least specify the same one as
the database.

I use ISO8859_1 for french names and don't have any problems.
