That would be an explanation - except, the first index WAS
built after download all the data ( CREATE INDEX ) while the
working version simply populated the index as it loaded the
data. I would have expected the second build to be
fragmented - not the first.

p.s I will give the simple update a run over the weekend and
see how long it takes :)
