Hi Jorg,
you can rename files that are in use - because Windows will sometimes let
you - try it and see :o)
I've had to do this myself when removing an installation of (ahem) Oracle
from my PC prior to installing a new version.
If you find that you cannot rename the files, then you have to start the
server in safe mode and delete the files from a DOS box/command line
instead.
Alternatively, you might find that the installer for the new version will be
quite intelligent and set up a command to replace the locked files on the
next reboot.
Cheers,
Norman.

Morning Norman,
Thanks for your quick response.
How can I rename files that are in use? Any ideas what can activate
the GDS32.DLL, as far as I know everything from Interbase has been
removed from the system except for the directory which gives us the
problems.
The IBGuardian and IBserver services aren't running.
Jorg.
