AFAIK, Interbase/Firebird DON'T make pessimistic locking. The for update
is only used with CURSOR inside triggers and procedures. See Interbase
6.0 Guide:

"FOR UPDATE Specifies columns listed after the SELECT clause of a DECLARE
CURSOR statement that can be updated using a WHERE CURRENT OF clause"
