Ah ha. Now I got it. This is a "Firebird-ism" :) I can live with that.
The problem is that I'm pretty green when it comes to SQL and I'm not to
the point where I know when something I'm seeing is a problem with my
understanding versus a particular product quirk.

That's nice to know also. I think I'd read that somewhere in the
Firebird documents I've been perusing but it didn't really sink in until
now the implications of _forcing_ quoting in all future uses.
