I understand that, however, the posters question only concerned retrieving
the field types. It wasn't mentioned that they were interested in comparing
DBs or updating them.

I use a similar method for my databases. An updated script is generated and
sent out. The admin update program reads the script and performs all updates
needed in order. Each update number is stored in a table so it's never done
more than once. Initially, I wrote mine for Access databases. I am currently
trying to finish one converted to IB/FB.
