Basically no one could stand alone against RedHat. So they are all
teaming up together and hope that UnitedLinux will be able to compete
with RedHat.
However I am have not looked into their new distro which version 1.0 was
released back in November of 2002.
Now that they are all participating I am not sure what it does to each
one's distro of Linux?
Now with all that said, from what I have seen so far, SuSe might be a
more productive desktop version of Linux. However most of the underlying
things that will be used for say a Firebird server are going to be about
the same on either RedHat or SuSe. The differences at that point will be
mood issue ones. Like file/program locations, installers, etc.
Now for some personal input.
SuSe headquarters is in Germany. Making it mainly a German distro of
Linux. Germany, and some other countries that need not be mentioned are
not on the U.S.'s A list. With that being said I could not base my
business platform on a product from another country. Especially one that
is not in the best relations with the country I reside in.
I am a bid advocate of supporting local things. If you reside in Germany
or near by, support SuSe efforts. If you reside in the U.S. or nearby
support RedHat. So one way to go about it if the differences are minimal
is which distro is based closest to where you reside.
Otherwise go with the one that has the features you need. Or in your
opinion was the easiest for you to install and configure.
Linux distros can be like religions or women. Not all faiths, and tastes
are the same. Pick which ever helps you to get through the day, and
tickles your fancy. ;) Apples vs Oranges.
