Nice question. I think we could sit and talk about it for weeks, or even
months.
Anyway, the same advantages or disadvantages as setting a server or client
based on Linux or Windows.
Windows:
- - You pay for closed source software, which usually is plenty of bugs
- - Don't even think of trying to modify that software, as you could belong to
jail.
- - You get no support for your system from the moment they release a new
version.
- - You get (security) updates late (if you ever get them)
- - You are letting a unique corporation control the live of many people,
including you.
- - And you are letting your money go to a single company (maybe you agree with
capitalism, but I don't)
- - You are in the dark side of the force ;-)
Linux:
- - You get open source software, so you help contributing to the idea operating
systems should be base structure of current days, like roads in cities are.
- - You get the right to modify the source code to fit your needs.
- - You get support of old versions.
- - You get (security) updates very often and free of cost
- - Your data is not in control of anyone but you.
- - You keep apart from the dark side of the force ;-)
And, after all, what you were looking for: all the technical advantages of
Linux systems in front of all disadvantages of Windows systems. Nevertheless,
you can still let your employees use Windows in their desktops (you know, to
use Kazaa, Emule and all that sort of important tools at work :-D).
I am talking as a GNU/Debian Linux user. I hate (don't like, didn't really
hate) Red Hat and Suse (I didn't at the beginning, but I do since about a
year ago as they are not what they were born for).
It's late here, and I have to wake up early in the morning tomorrow. I'd
better be going to sleep. Sorry for the long post :-P
