The server runs on an old (nay ancient) P-90 with 192MB RAM and 6GB HD,
running Mandrake 7.1.

I had already started the work configuring a new news server (1U rack
mount P-III 533 with 512MB RAM and 12Gb HD, running Mandrake 9.0), but
Mark O. and I hadn't yet had the chance to complete the configuration
and migrate the NGs (we'd both been busy on other things).
