Now, if you modify the sources to produce your own "private label"
version of the engine, then you must make the changes you made to
Firebird sources available to your customers.
NOTE: You NEVER need to release your code, only changes made to the
original Firebird sources.
The only way that Firebird could move to another license, would require
that the engine be re-written by a "white-room" process (i.e. written
without any knowledge/reference to the original sources).
