Many thanks for all responses so far.

On a test server FB1.0 *does indeed seem to work aok with IB5.6 ODS.*

Hence my questions and the need for absolute clarity. This plus the need to
tread carefully as worst case scenario has to be contemplated.

If I don't need to upgrade the clients straight away then this is preferred.
Also a worst-case restoration to IB5.6 server becomes easy also.
