Yes I'm connecting with that character set.
When I go into any interbase tool I can only ever see the first
character of these fields.
I had assumed that was normal for unicode_fss but perhaps not?

All data has been inserted using IBObjects AsWideString command so I'm
not sure if that has something to do with it.

I don't have a problem using UNICODE_FSS varchar fields in conjunction
with STARTING WITH. Are you connecting to the database using
UNICODE_FSS as the character set?
