With IB doesn't it work on the number and type of licences you have
installed ?
Naturally FB has an 'open' license, so this is not an issue, but there must
be some theoretical limit.

No, and it doesn't apply to InterBase either.

As far as I remember, the current hard-coded limit is 1024 connections.
