IB5, IB6, possibly IB6.5, and Fb 1.0 to Fb 1.0.2 were all 'slow'. Due to a
coding error there was a built in delay of up to one second for each
connect. This has been fixed from Fb 1.0.3 onwards (and for IB, too, but I
can't remember when.)

So yes, there is an overhead in starting a new connection, but nothing like
there used to be.
