i use Firebird-net-provider (you can download it on firebirds downloads
page) in production
and its working very well...

Anyway Delphi 8 will produce managed code, so you will need .NET
framework to run your
programs.
May be, that MONO (opensource version of .NET framework) will be
production stable in
few months (i use it now in production), so you will be able to run your
delphi 8 programs on Linux
too.
