Yes, they can. I'm using that and this works pretty well, especially
for test purposes.

The Firebird 1.5 Server can listen on a different port than 3050.
You can change the port with the RemoteServicePort Parameter in
the firebird.conf file. The connect string can include the port
number, so are you able to decide to what Firebird "instance"
you want to connect. The connect string should look like that:

server/port:c:\....

e.g.

MYSERVER/3040:c:\...

This would mean that you will try to connect to Firebird installed
on MYSERVER listening on port 3040.

If you want to run both 1.0 and 1.5 as services, you will have
to change the service display name for 1.0 for installing 1.5
as service. Though, I'm not sure if this still applies for RC6.
