No. The current install does uses root, but this is being addressed

I am not a Linux guru, but the SS is farliy easy, you need to create a new
user that has access to the firebird directory (and temp files), and use this
user in your init script (its etc/init.d/firebird on my SuSE box), for
classic, I think you need to change the user in the inetd/xinetd config file,
but I am sure somebody more knowledgable will chip in.
