I have been using Firebird, and before it, Interbase, for a good number of
years, and this issue has never been a problem. It might be that I worked
around it subconsiously, It might be that I have never needed the
functionality you do. I have only ever used case insensitivity in
'reporting', and have always found a suitable characterset to work with (I
use Linux), I have never really needed it in a WHERE clause, as I only
normally use those to find a specific record.
