FB 1.5 is in the Alpha stage of development right now and you can get
your hands on it if you want to test it. As for an expected date,
some are hoping sometime second quarter of this year, but do keep in
mind that the developers are volunteers and do the development on
their free time.

IB 5.x used dialect 1. FB databases can use dialect 1 or dialect 3.
Dialect 1 has some limitations in regards to data types and is slowly
being deprecated has the development of Firebird will move forward.
Also, dialect 1 has been kept especially for migration and backwards
compatibility from IB 5.x. Usually by default when you create a
database in Firebird, it's created using dialect 3.
