Subject Re: [ib-support] "Borland dropped Interbase"

To add to Helen's story, IB only represented 2 or 3 % of Borland's
revenue, even though it (IB Unit) was paying
for itself, some pin head accountant (I sell accounting software so I
know what I am talking about :-) )
decided that it wasn't worth the effort. Most of the Interbase staff
quit (loudly). Pressure was put
on Borland to release it open source. With the .com and open source
companies going strong with
IPOs, etc. it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I understand that
a new executive came on board
shortly before the Open source deal was to close with IBPhoenix, and he
basically said why are we
doing this. Interbase got a reprieve from the "Borland" garbage can.

Now during this 6 to 9 months, Borland pissed off about 90% of the IB
supporters. I don't know
how it is doing now. I _*CAN NOT*_ see Firebird dying. Again, the only
thing hurting it is open connectivity
capability. Lot's of projects are moving forward in this area. Fire
the consultant and hire a programmer
to help with Firebird :-) . That is the best way to keep Firebird
strong. Who knows if IB will
get the ax later.
