Mine is working fine on SUSE8.0 as well.

If you look in Yast2 -> System -> Runtime editor -> Runlevel
properties - you will find the entry for firebird and can
select it to start with the other network stuff.

This indicates, I think, that the windows is not seeing the
machine

Do you have the 3050 entry in 'services' on both machines?

I have machine names and ip addresses in 'hosts' on all
machines and do not see a problem.
