Thanks to Ann and Martjin for a hand with this problem, in the immortal words of
Homar Simpson D'oh!!!!!!

Because some idiot (me) created a after insert trigger on this table that copies the
field's value to another table.field which is only 20 chars wide, so it was this insert
that was causing the problem. Okay now lets see if my barber can make what's
left look presentable......
