I would blame the OS rather than the DB. I have run InterBase 6.0 for
almost two years, and now Firebird 1.0 as of last night.

I had similar issues back in the day on windows, but as a server I
always run Linux. I rarely see the processes eating up a substantial
part of the processor regardless of what I am doing.

In fact, I seem to be under the impression that Firebird is a little
faster than InterBase, or at least my initial testing makes me think
that.

So if possible run the DB server on a more robust and stable platform.
If you go the Unix/Linux/Posix route, also try to avoid using a
graphical system on the DB server. If you want max performance.
