Well yes.. You have to remove the ;
Such as:

SET SPECIMENID = :counter
WHERE blahblahblahblah and blah

Sorry about the subject, I forgot to add that in. I can't seem to get
anything accepted after the :counter statement. I keep getting an
illegal token ; erorr.
