Thanx, but the problem remained. I already reset all ibconfig params to
default, but not helped me.
This problem is not XP specific. On a win2000 is the connection
(database open) very slow.

This can be by the XP system : it may try to may backup-copy first
before opening a database.
this is nice for small word docs but idiotic for larger files. Try to
work around by using a different
file name : mydatabase.gdb --> mydatabase.fbd - which is not a
registered SUFFIX
