With Delphi you would use one of the four suites of direct-to-API
components available for Firebird/InterBase, viz. IBObjects (2 suites, one
of which is compatible with the native Delphi VCL data-aware comps, the
other which has its own layering to the API with most of the API structures
surfaced as properties, plus its own data-aware comps); FIBPlus, a pretty
well-organised functional equivalent to IBO's VCL-compatible series; and
InterBaseXpress (IBX), also compatible with the VCL comps, which you can
get from your Delphi distro (5 or 6) and update from the Borland Community
website. The latter is more "raw" and more oriented toward the
TClientDataset approach that Borland has latterly been taking with data access.

iow, Delphi component coverage for Firebird/IB is superb - no need to write
your own!

IBX: you need to join CodeCentral ( and find
