Paul,
they can't run side-by-side. The next major release of Firebird
(v1.5/v2.0) will break this rule and allow for a side-by-side install
(while providing an optional 'compatibility' mode for older
applications)
I will point out that Firebird v1.0 is upwardly language compatible with
all versions of Interbase except 6.5.
So Firebird could directly replace IB in those cases (database files
created using 4.x or 5.x, though, would need to be 'migrated' to the
latest ODS version).
