The services API is a (relatively) thin layer on the underlying
utilities which are now conditionally compiled as standalone or
integrated parts of the larger engine. The sweep is started when
gfix connects to the database with a particular database parameter
that says "start a sweep." All the work is done within the core
engine. In short, Claudio is right in his assumption (with a
very high probability) and digging into the code will support
his position.
