I can answer one of your questions Hellen. The database never release space
once allocated. Rather, it marks the records as deleted and reuse the space
when you insert new data. To reclaim the physical space for use outside of
your database, I think you have to backup and restore.

I know nothing about the system log, so that's for someone else to answer.
