Hei Kai!
Thought you might like to know that Kreftregisteret is using Firebird for
our main database - containing all cancers diagnosed in Norway since 1953
(as well as some information about all of us, probably including your PIN
code (fødselsnummer), name and address).
Originally our main program was written using the BDE (well, once we
changed to using PCs), but then my boss discovered IBO and rewrote the
program in his spare time (it took him some hours, but not a lot)! And that
was before Jason completed his work on making IBO replace the BDE easily.
You're definitely right in that you ought to get rid of the BDE, it's fair
enough for desktop databases like Paradox/dBase, but not for client/server
databases.
Vi nje panemajete pa-rosskij? I'd say Russian comments is the best reason
I've seen for changing from IBO to FIBplus (I'm trying to learn that
language) ;o)
Set
PS! Jasons trustware lisence means that you're supposed to pay a modest fee
(at least by Norwegian standards) every six months while you are using IBO
for commercial development. Upgrading is all up to you, you never have to
do so, but you can do it all the time if you want to (bugfixes/enhancements
are added all the time).

Glad to hear that you're doing well. I actually collect messages like this,
just to show my boss that I've been right all the time :) (I've been
pestering them since IB went OS that we should get rid of the big, old
BDElephant)
I'm using FB RC2 right now, and went for FIBPlus components, mainly because
I could figure out what Jason meant with "subscription" - I was afraid that
I had to upgrade every 6 months. Besided FIBplus seems to be quick and
easy. The only problem I find is that the source and examples have Russian
comments, as if English, Norwegian, C++ and Delphi isen't enough languages
to keep track on. :)
