With a few caveats, dialect 1 emulates IB5 and IB4, so IB6/FB can use
databases for older ODS.
You should really plan on the features you get in dialect 3 v/s the
resistance of your customers to upgrade. Do you need exact numerics,
date-only and time-only fields, quoted identifiers and strict string
truncation detection? If not, why pushing your customers?
