solved...
thanks for your patience helen, my posts will improve, i promise.
btw- not closely guarded triggers, I'm realizing more like poorly written
triggers :)
i'm RTFMing myself in order to solve this and kill this thread.

Now...

We got the DDL and the simple insert. Both worked here in a FB RC2 database
with no exceptions.

There is one row in this table. It has a NULL ID column and 'foo' in the
three varchar(50) columns...

...so now...

What Database are you using? which version?

Show us your triggers and generators for this table! the error is not
occurring in the material you have provided *so far* so it has to be in
those closely-guarded triggers.

I'm going to bed but but I'm sure you will have a result before the sun
