It's funny!
I tried FirebirdSS-1.0.0.681-0.RC2.tar.gz for RH 6.2.
No success either. It requires GLIBC-2.2 i.e RH 7.? :-)
It would be good to have separate tar file for every particular GLIBC version.
What the error messages do you get?
