Didn't you read the code excerpt I posted? If the guardian doesn't tell the
engine to take the mutex, the engine doesn't take that mutex. So simple.
It's used by the guardian to detect when the engine dies. So, if the
guardian is not running, that mutex doesn't have sense.

The rest of the mutexes are internal to the engine and are used for
protecting sensitive portion of code. Nothing to do with the above mutex.
