Actually it may be installed already. It just may be looking for a .so
with a different name.
Do a locate ncurses or libncurses
On my RH 8.0 system I have
/usr/lib/libncurses.so.5.2
/usr/lib/libncurses.so.5
In you case you would need to do something like
libncurses.so.4 -> libncurses.so.5
Or something like that. Try to link to the actual so, but you can
symlink a symlink. ;)

Agreed, that script has made starting and stopping allot easier. I would
also recommend using it.

RH 8.0 works great on a production server. My Fb Db server has been
running RH 8.0 for several month straight now with no problems.
My personal opinion is RH is the most common dare I say best distro for
business corporate users. This is now off topic, and I do not want to
start a flame or opinion war.
Rule of thumb, business/corporations like certifications. RH really has
the only widely known and accepted certification program.

I do not think you will be unable to get things working. Nor do I think
you will have stability issues. You just have simple problem(s) so far,
nothing that you won't run into with other apps as well.
