According to the history on firebird.sourceforge.net it stands for "Groton
DataBase" Groton Database Systems was the name of the company that Jim
Starkey started in 1984 to write and market InterBase. That's where all the
"g's" come from (gfix, gbak, etc.). Groton, Massachusetts is where the
company was started.
