Not if you are performing updates in that transaction. :-))

You might get some value from reading Bill Karwin's famous article, "Ten
Ways to Make InterBase Scream" (from the docs section of the IBPhoenix site).

A lot of us old hands know how to make indexes work for us, along with a
few tricks to stop the optimizer choosing a slow plan. Post a sample of a
slow query and let us get into it with our teeth.
