I agree with Helen on this.
I use Grid in my application under two circumstances.
Editing a master detail situation e.g. items in a invoice

Show enough columns in a grid for the user to select which record to edit.
When he presses enter I show up that record in a modal window for him to edit.
Ocassionally if there is a simple date field or status field I "may" allow editing on the grid itself.

Even in this grid there is some default filter set so that what the user sees is at the most two or three screenfulls of data.
He has an interface to change this default filter to display 120,000 records to scroll through if he wants to.<g>
