where the only linux box is the database server would need to restore
onto windows to get going again quickly.
As part of automated backups my cron script does the gbak -B and then
immediately a gbak -R to a temp gdb so that I am confident it is OK. If
you were not worried by architectural issues you could just
backup/transfer to another machine the new gdb file.
